Is it harmful using cell phone?

The number of cell phone, or mobile phone, users has increased rapidly. When you are walking on a traffic street you will see a lot of people are holding a cell phone talking, if I say there are one out of five or six of passengers I don’t think it were exaggerated. According to the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association, as of 2010 there were more than 303 million subscribers to cell phone service in the US. Globally, the number of cell phone subscriptions is estimated by the International Telecommunications Union to be 5 billion and increasing sharply.

What the important concern of user or the parent of younger user is would cell phone using cause brain tumor?  Cell phones emit radiofrequency energy (RFR, radio wave) a form of ectromagnetic radiation.  There are two types of radiation, ionizing and non-ionizing, RFR is a form of non-ionizing radiation. Tissues nearest to where the phone is held can absorb this energy. As we long know that exposure to ionizing radiation (e.g. x-ray, radiation therapy, radon, and cosmic rays) increase the risk of cancer. However, although many studies have examined the potential
health effects of non-ionizing radiation (e.g. RF, radar, microwave ovens and others), there is no consistent evidence that non-ionizing radiation increases cancer.

Let us review some scientific studies regarding to the effect of RF radiation.

A study has shown that the effect of RFR damage cellular DNA and lipid, especially to the brain tissue of developing fetuses in pregnant women and older people. (Goknur Guler 2010) Another study has shown that mobile phone radiation alters protein expression and activity in human endothelial cell. (Dariusz 2011) A recent study using PET showed that long used of cell phone increase the glucose metabolism of the brain tissues on the same side of the head as the phone’s antenna closed to. (Nora D. Volkow Feb. 2012) What is the biological significance of this glucose metabolism increasing (such as neurotransmitter and neurochemical activities) is still to be investigated further.

Results from a study shown that 20 minutes RFR exposure of 900 and 1,800 MHz induce an effect of increasing the permeability of Blood-brain Barrier of male rats. (Bahriye Sirav 2009) BBB is a protective mechanism to the brain preventing toxic substances invaliding.

From all these studies they did not directly indicate that RFR is associated with the potential risk of tumor formation, but as a matter of fact it did show changes of some biological structure or activities of the body cell or the brain cells. A suspicion breaks out to me that these changes could contribute to metabolic imbalance or cell’s vital abnormal activities, leading to an unwanted physiological result that might be the cause of cancer in the later time.

How about cognitive effects of cell phone?

All we know that music or noise affects our mind. Then, we can pretty sure that RFR created by cell phone can affect our brain too, but what and how much?

The studies on the cognitive function affecting by cell phone use did not show consistent results. There are different results variable on the system of the phone used, the time block of use, the amount of time of use, and the side of the head where the phone attaches.

A study to test effects of mobile phone radiation (GSM900MHz) on spatial learning and memory in laboratory animals shown the exposed animals had deficits in consolidation and retrieval of the learned spatial information. (Fragopoulou 2009) Another study shown that the response time and accuracy of the responses were variable depending on the duration of phone using (the
longer the worse), the time block of exposure, and the side of exposure (right-hand responses under left-side exposure condition was significantly longer). (Luria 2009)

Result shown either exposure to GSM 900 or WCDMA do not effect on human cognition, but they underline the necessity to control for time of day (faster reaction in the afternoon) . (Sauter 2011).

Interesting enough, a study performed by the Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center shown that long-term electromagnetic field exposure directly associated with cell phone use provides cognitive benefits.   In Alzheimer’s disease mice, long-term electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure reduced brain amyloid-beta (Abeta) deposition through Abeta anti-aggregation actions and increased brain temperature during exposure periods. Several inter-related mechanisms of EMF action are proposed, including increased Abeta clearance from the brains of Alzheimer’s disease mice, increased neuronal activity, and increased cerebral blood flow.  However, caution should be taken in extrapolating these mouse studies to humans. (Arendash 2010)

A study on effects of electromagnetic fields emitted by cell phones on the macrostructure of sleep shown that there is no evidence for a sleep-disturbing effect of GSM 900 and WCDMA exposure. (Danker-Hopfe 2011)

My takes: 1. Studies shown RFR affects the brain, either the neurotransmitters, the mitochondria, the glucose metabolism or the BBB, although not directly point to a result of cancer risk;

                  2. The manufacturer change the mode of cell phone by new technology with a tendency of using higher frequency apply for faster reception or multiple functions;

                  3. Disadvantages or body damage only be found after a long time of cell phone use, that means many years afterward and the changes probably too late to reverse .

My advices: 1. Use headset to avoid the close contact of antenna;

                      2. Keep the cell phone In a distant to your brain before a dial is connected;

                      3. Lower the frequency and shorter the time of use;

                      4. Consider not to use or much less in the early months of pregnancy.

Sex headache can cause memory loss

“STOP, honey, oh my head…..”

Sudden headache can interrupt the joy at the hotest point of sexual activity.

Headache, in fact, is a very common ailment and can be caused by medical condition or others. If headache does not cause by a disease or other medical condition would be categorize as Primary headache such as tension headache, migraine, and  cluster headache. Secondary headaches are caused by medical related conditions, such as neck injuries, strokes, and sinus infection.

Sexual headaches are headaches brought on by sexual activity, including intercourse, oral sex and masturbation, but especially an orgasm. They can be classified as a migraine-type headache. About one in 100 people will develop a sex headache at some point in his or her life, and men are at least 3 times as likely to get them. People who are already prone to headaches tend to grapple with sex headaches more than others.

There are two types of sex headaches: abrupt and slow-to-build sex headaches. The abrupt one presents with throbbing or stabbing without warning and occurs within a few seconds of an orgasm (about 70 % of cases). The other variety of sex headache often begins as a dull ache on both sides of the head building up gradually over a matter of minutes before an orgasm (about 25 % of cases). The ache may cause tightening of the neck and jaw muscles and intensifies as sexual excitement increases. Most sex headaches last about 30 minutes, others may linger for a few hours.

To date, the best explanation is that the sex headache is due to muscle contraction and / or blood vessel dilatation in the head and neck during intimacy. Increases norepinephrine and decreases of serotonin and endophine also contribute to the cause of sex headache.

Diseases related to sex headaches include high blood pressure, sinus infection, coronary heart disease, anemia and glaucoma.  If you have a new, severe headache during sex it may require immediate attention because it might be a rupture of blood vessel resulting bleeding into the brain. Other factors to consider include alcohol intake, food and beverage consumed in the six hours prior to sex, the size of pre-coital meal, low blood sugar, birth control pills usage, marijuana  intake, and lack of sleep.

If the sex headaches are not caused by illness they mostly are harmless. But frequent sex headaches associated with disturbance of blood supply to the brain, interrupt the balance of brain hormones, and affect the neurotransmitters production and activity potentially resulting into memory loss.

A research paper published in the Journal of Headache and pain (2004) which studied on 50 women and 21 men, affected by chronic headache with different diagnoses, underwent a test battery in order to evaluate both short- and long-term memory. Up to 56 % of headache patient showed a worse performance than normal subjects. The percentage of the subjects with memory difficulty was higher in women and in patients with migraine-type headache at onset. Researchers concluded that a complex neurotransmitter disorder might account for impairment of both short-term and long-term memory in headache patients.

What can you do to help eliminating sex headache?

  • Treat any illness related      to the headaches—Hypertension, high brain pressure and heart disease increase the chance of rupture of blood vessels in the brain.
  • Avoid heavy alcohol or      recreation drugs taking—Alcohol and drugs increase stress hormone, decrease serotonin and endophine affect the size of blood vessels and circulation.
  • Take relative small size of food prior to sex – Heavy meal induces high insulin secretion and resulting in low glucose level in the blood.
  • Slow down — Do breathing  exercise before sexual activity to decrease the heart beats and stress hormone secretion. Practice more on foreplay.
  • Changing sexual positions – Standing up instead of lying down or stay under instead of on top.
  • Relax –Taking a more passive role during sex.

As a rule of thumb, protect your brain and mind not being injury by eating healthy diet, exercising regularly and taking brain supplements can help to prevent memory loss, particularly you are a headache suffer.
